Bricklayers prepare, lay brick and other masonry units to construct and repair structures such as walls, partitions, fireplaces and chimneys. They also lay or install fire brick or castable materials on commercial or industrial projects.

Responsibilities

  • Read sketches & blueprints to calculate materials required
  • Measure and construct corners first, using a plumb line & mason’s level to ensure level layers
  • Spread mortar and prepare and lay bricks, concrete blocks or other masonry units
  • Cut and trim bricks & concrete blocks to specification using hand & power tools
  • Understand properties of various mortars & other bonding materials, and how to handle different masonry units

What You’ll Need

Entrance Requirements

3 years, includes a minimum 8 weeks of technical training and 1,600 hours of on-the-job training and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.

To potentially qualify for credit to reduce length of apprenticeship term: Completed courses of study, bricklayer-related work experience or related journeyperson certificate AND employer’s recommendation.

To apply for a Prior Learning Assessment: Previous training/work experience in the trade AND desire to determine level of skill & knowledge or advanced standing in an apprenticeship program.
