Welders apply heat to metal pieces to melt and fuse them together. They join or sever metals in beams, girders, vessels, piping and other metal components. They weld parts, tools, machines and equipment, and make metal parts used in construction and manufacturing. Welders work indoors and outdoors, depending on the industry or welding project. This career involves a variety of job duties.

Responsibilities

  • Use different welding processes & fillers
  • Follow directions in layouts, blueprints & work orders
  • Develop patterns for projects
  • Clean and check for defects, shape component parts, and use a cutting torch
  • Weld parts together and build up worn parts

Entrance Requirements

Apprenticeship Program:

3 years, includes 8 weeks of technical training and 1,500 hours (minimum) on-the-job training per year, and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.
